OVERVIEW
As the county's chief law enforcement officer, it is the responsibility of the State's Attorney to commence and prosecute criminal violations of Illinois law within Jefferson County, to provide counsel to the Grand Jury and to commence and prosecute all investigations before the Grand Jury, and to commence and prosecute matters pursuant to the Juvenile Court Act of Illinois, including actions to adjudicate minors to be wards of the Court as a result of abuse, neglect or delinquency. The State's Attorney also serves as legal counsel for the county's government, including the County Board and County Office Holders.
State's Attorney Featherstun supervises a staff of 5 full-time Assistant State's Attorneys, 1 full-time Victim/Witness Coordinator and 4 support personnel. The office processes yearly in excess of 600 felony cases, 700 misdemeanor cases and 7,000 traffic cases. The office provides services to victims and to witnesses guiding them through the maze of the legal system.
